As an Occupational Therapist, I have a unique opportunity in being able to combine my love of llamas with my profession. Click here to read an article about some of the experiences I've had when I brought my llamas to my job. The Pet Partners Program trains volunteers and screens their pets for visiting animal programs in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and schools. Training is provided through hands-on workshops taught by Delta-licensed instructors, a home study course and videotape, and a continuing education newsletter. Animals are independently tested for skills and aptitude by Delta-licensed animal evaluators.
Through the pet-partner certification process, the pet-partner team can provide animal assisted activities (AAA) or animal assisted therapy (AAT.) Animal-assisted activities are basically the casual "meet and greet" activities that involve pets visiting people. The same activity can be repeated with many people, unlike a therapy program that is tailored to a particular person or medical condition.
AAT is designed to promote improvement in human physical, social, emotional, and/or cognitive functioning [cognitive functioning refers to thinking and intellectual skills]. AAT is provided in a variety of settings and may be group or individual in nature. This process is documented and evaluated." (From Standards of Practice for Animal-Assisted Activities and Therapy)
